Symbol Structure: A Series Primer>

With My Hero Academia looming on the horizon, and many new players trying out the game with the abundance of free time, I’m going to start going over quick ways to look at building through each of the symbols! Some people can simply look at a character like Bakugo and say “Well, of course I’m going to play him on Fire, that’s his THING!” and I was certainly like that at first. I would build my multitude of Ken decks always on Fire, and they were always mediocre. This was back in the day when this was the Ken I played with, so things are a bit different now. I’m going to go through them in alphabetical order. So, I’m sorry aspiring fans of Void & Water, you’re going to have to wait a little bit for me to get to them.
I’m going to go over the strengths and weaknesses of each symbol, and I’m going to put extra emphasis on the weaknesses. If your character can overcome a glaring weakness of a given symbol, then you may just have something special on your hands. I’m also going to highlight some of the more expensive, but worthwhile, cards per symbol, as well as some commons & uncommons that you should look into getting to start getting your decks in gear! Of course a fair bit of this is going to be my opinion, some people would certainly say that Universus doesn’t exactly have “staple cards” like other games, but there are very few decks on its symbols where Revoke isn’t going to be a big help, and even some decks off symbol! Speaking of play off-symbol cards, I’m going to try and identify a few cards that can be effortlessly slipped into decks that AREN’T primarily on the given symbol, but these are versatile cards that can slip in and out of your card pool. Usually they will be discarded or removed after they are used, and there will probably not be more than a handful of these cards per list, as this isn’t exactly a strategy that should be used often, or in great numbers.
As a general rule I’m going to try and not list cards older than Cowboy Bebop, as I don’t want to convince people to get cards that will rotate out of standard within a year, and it is just easier to focus on fewer sets. It also adds a bit of life to these articles if they aren’t referencing a bunch of cards that don’t exist in standard anymore. I am also going to try to avoid recommending cards that are specific to gimmicks, as those could be saved for articles that deal with themes.
Of course each symbol is going to have LOTS of great cards, and since cards have 3 symbols, I’m going to try to avoid listing cards multiple times across lists, but it can certainly happen. For example, Air Ground Smash is a fine card in Air or Life if you can use the ability on it, but I will just place it under Water. I’m also going to try and not name more than half a dozen cards in each category. I don’t want to take up your whole day here!
